Lesson 10 Visualization before every golf shot

LESSON 10 Visualization before you take your shot.

Plus the very special Feature At the Bottom of this page.

From Eric Jones the World Long Distance Champion

Home of the 2010 Ryder Cup. It was be great. We can not take sides because we have members world wide, and thousands from the UK and the USA, however we do live in Wales. And play at the Celtic Manor it will be amazing.

For the members and followers who have been on board since lesson 1 you will by now understand the teaching philosophy.
First basics, then the fundamentals of golf, now we are into stage three which is intended to take you and your coach on a practice round, it works in many ways it is designed to teach you how to visualize every shot, to transport you into a real golf game, where and when you do things by the book it works, when you lose focus / concentration then you pay the penalty. (The good thing is the coach is there to teach you how to play the recover shot)
For new members just joining may we respectfully suggest you that you start from lesson 1, for some the first few lessons may be too basic but it can still revitalize your game to check all the fundamentals.
Recap: In lesson 9 On Hole Number 1
YES!!!!!!!!!!!YES!!!!!!!!! A birdie on the first hole, it is a great feeling to get a good start. Stay with us we WILL teach you to play great golf.
Your virtual reality hole, you visualized every shot, perfect swing, every ball on the correct trajectory, landing on target. WOW if only it was that easy.
OK lesson 10 Starts – here:
Now you are the walking tall, full of confidence and standing on tee 2, which is par 4 430 yards, degree of difficulty index 7 .
Now visualize this———— in your mind you think!!!
This is easy, in goes you tee peg, on goes the ball, quick look down the fairway step up and swing, swish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lots of club head speed, quick look up ball is flying high looking ok, then it takes a sharp turn right, oh no it in the heavy rough, a wicked slice.
How did that happen??
It was a slice:(When your ball turns hard right.) It should not have happened; it was your fault you did not go through your pre-shot routine, rushed the shot, swinging like a mad axe man. Ok forget it done now to make sure it does not happen again this is what you do.
Reason: Out to in swing is putting spin on the ball.
Check your grip: and stance. Go through your pre-shot routine, line the logo on the ball up with the target. Make certain that the clubface is square and in line with the target. Objective: To return to clubface back to that exact position at impact.
Adjust your swing to ensure the club face is square at impact to achieve this, take the club back with the left hand in control, keep the club low in line with the target until outside your right foot try a smaller arc on the back swing; on the down swing focus on an in to out swing, DO NOT CAST THE CLUB OUT or your will pull the club from outside to in imparting spin on the ball.
The club must return on the same path as your take away directly in line with the ball and target. To cure your slice keep your eye on the ball and aim to impact on the inside of the ball, keep left arm straight and in control pull down with the left arm do not force the shot timing tempo hit through the ball wrists rotating arms in line with the target – keep your head down until the ball is well on its way
If you are still slicing try dropping your right foot and shoulder back from the target, objective to develop more round the body swing.
Ok now you know what you done wrong:
Golfers with a strong mental game realize that the present is
all that they can control. (Forget your bad shot)
Learn to play in the present without dwelling the bad shots.
Realize the power of just being in the moment with the
full intention and expectation to play a good shot.
OK we still have a game to play so what now? Your ball is deep in the rough you may not find it. So what most club players will do is play a second ball from the tee: referred to as a provisional ball which you are permitted to play just in case you cannot find your original ball. However if you do play the provisional ball you have to take a penalty stroke and are then playing your third shot.
You play your provisional ball which is much better 210 yards and on the fairway. You are strolling down the fairway but not a happy bunny; you now have a maximum of 5 minutes to find your first ball. No luck it is gone, one lost ball costing you time and money plus frustration and a penalty stoke.
Put all that out of your mind: Focus. You are playing your third shot and still a long way to the green, 220 yards to the flag, a hill on the right of the green, deep bunker on the left, and a run off slope into a ditch behind the green.
Options:
1 Attack – take a three wood and go for the centre of the green.
2 Play safe and lay up 100 yards short of the green.
You go for attack, take time to go through your pre shot routine aim directly at flag.
Be positive over the shot you have the correct club for this distance trust you club your swing tempo remains the same every time, the club you selected WILL control the loft and distance.
With your fairway metals in this case your 3 wood, take a practice swing take the club back low and in line with the target, swing through brushing the grass. That is the swing you need. You play the shot it looks great perfect swing and contact with the ball on line with the flag, then it slowly drifts right, and lands on the hill 30 yards right of the flag.
NOW what happened?? Oh heck you forgot to check the wind, you had wind from left to right, and you should have been aiming 20 yards left of the flag. So you are now playing stroke 4 and not on the green with your ball on a down slope sitting down in the grass. On your way to your ball study the contours of the green carefully select you target area. Chipping from a downhill lie: play a high chip with a lofted wedge.
Many PGA players now carry 60° lofted wedges; however it takes a great deal of practice before the average player can play a prefect shot with a 60° wedge. We recommend you stay with your pitching or sand wedge, unless you have practiced with your 60°lofted wedge.
You are 30 yards from the flag 15 yards from the edge of the green. From the green consider your options, use your pitch wedge, you must swing in line with the slope providing your shoulders are at the same angle as the slope and you swing with timing and smooth tempo, hit through the ball in line with the target it should land on the green, but with a lower flight path so allow for the ball to run up to the flag.
Use the clock face to train your memory, short swing back to seven o clock through to five o’clock longer swing more distance then take the club up to nine o clock and through to three o clock.
You have checked the green which runs away behind the flag, so you decide to go direct at the flag. Make sure your swing is parallel to the slope, wide stance, and steady balance. Check your line to the target – ensure you aiming correct, clubface to the target. Take one or two practice swings the club must brush along the grass in the same way it would if you were standing on level ground, Do not try to lift the ball with the club, trust the extra loft it WILL take the ball on the correct flight path.
You are 30 yards from the flag 15 yards from the edge of the green. From the green consider your options, use your pitch wedge, you must swing in line with the slope providing your shoulders are at the same angle as the slope and you swing with timing and smooth tempo, keep your head down eyes on the ball, hit through the ball in line with the target it should land on the green, but with a lower flight path so allow for the ball to run up to the flag.
Use the clock face to train your memory, short swing back to seven o clock through to five o clock longer swing more distance then take the club up to nine o clock and through to three o clock.
Yes the ball lands on green, and rolls 5 feet past the flag, leaving you a tricky putt for double bogey. Mark your ball, pick it up clean in and place it back on the green with the logo on the ball lined up your target, you read the green it is smooth and fast with a slight incline from right to left, you decide to aim for the right edge of the hole allow for the ball to turn a little. Head and eyes directly over the ball do keep your head and body perfectly still, NO movement in the legs.
Keep your back swing smooth. Rock the shoulders arms moving in a pendulum like motion. (Tick tock) Take the putter back only a short distance and then accelerate towards the ball keeping the putter blade going through smooth and square in line with the target. DO NOT LIFT your head until the ball is well on its way, on short putts you should hear the ball drop in the hole, not see it. This you do hear the ball drop in the cup. On the green and one putt that was the saving factor.
Putting is the most important element in the game of golf remember in and one game you will only use your driver 15 times. Most games you will take 36 stokes with your putter. If you want to lower your scores practice your short game and putting, for 70% of your practice time.
